YouTube Algorithm and Views
YouTube algorithm is a programmed instructions for how YouTube to determine and recommend, suggest, or stop recommendation and suggestion of videos. This means YouTube algorithm work as artificial intelligence (AI), having the ability to detect and act based on the instructions given during coding. The logic in which YouTube determine which videos to suggest, recommend, not suggest or unrecommend is known as algorithm.
This algorithm determine how many view you get based on your posted video.
YouTube algorithm
There following algorithm are used to judge your video’s ranking.
Impressions
Impressions are action initial steps taken on your videos when posted. This is calculated as; out of 100 people that see the thumbnail of your video, how many people interact click to watch your video?
YouTube algorithm uses this metrics as part of its measurement to know what action to take on your video.
Watch hour/time
Watch time or watch hour is how many minutes or hour watched from the total video’s duration. The equation can be written as TOTAL DURATION – NUMBER OF MINUTES WATCHED * NUMBER OF VIEWSERS = AVERAGE WATCH TIME.
Watch time is very important signal that people love your video or not. For example if you posted a video of ten (10) minute long but out of 100 people 50 watch only 1 minute and they quit, the other 50 watch up to 3 minutes and they stopped, this information clearly means people are not enjoying your video thus the algorithm will judge you by this metrics.
Likes and Dislike
Like means appealing or interesting and dislike means not interesting. If more people vote against your video with dislike button indicate your video is not tolerated. This help the algorithm to understand the viewers opinion about your video.
More likes probably indicate people support your idea, action or service.
Share
Sharing is a manual recommendation of videos to others on YouTube or on other social pages. Since YouTube algorithm do not judge by only one metric, share is also used to detect if people are manually recommending your videos.
Comment
Comment is a direct message from viewers to you the channel owner, individual comment may support or against your video. This is meant for you but the algorithm can judge by using positive or negative words in your comments.
Subscription
Subscription simply means following, how often do people follow you? Example, when receive 1000 views how many subscribe (follow)? YouTube can understand you by this data.
Returning viewers
Returning viewers are viewers that return to watch same or other videos in your channel. Do people love to watch your new videos or they regret visiting your channel? the algorithm will measure considering this as a factor.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Search engine optimization is the configuring of your videos and channel metadata to match the query of a searched keyword. Most viewers search for what they want to watch, for example when they search for “Maize”, only videos that say something about maize will show in the search result.
Search keywords are extracted from your video’s title, description, tag and the channels description as general.
Critical example; if I search for “which is the most beautiful country in the world?” and there are videos titled as “The country I love most”, “Witch craft power in China”, “The largest city in the world”, “The finest country on earth”. Which of the video titled do you think I will like to watch? of cause “The finest country on earth” because it contain synonyms of what I am looking for.
Search engine uses keywords to know the intent of the viewer. In my search “which is the most beautiful country in the world?” the search engine uses this keyword from my phrase, (which, most beautiful, country, world).
That is why it is very important how you title and give description to your video.
Language barrier
Do you know language is one of the factors that affect your watch time? Videos produced in a language not know to many or limited to one geographical location cannot trend as videos in international language like English. Only action videos can trend even without translation.
Example; videos in India language will not trend in countries that cannot speak it, except it is an action video where people can understand by the actions in the video.
The YouTube algorithm will also use the video’s language as a factor in which countries to recommend your videos.
How to get more views by recommended videos.
Recommended videos are videos that appear in YouTube home. YouTube home videos are videos that you see when you open YouTube app on your phone or when you visit https://youtube.com in a browser without searching anything.
The algorithm uses the the factors described above to recommend or to not recommend your video. When your impression, watch time, like, share, positive comment, subscription is high or higher, the YouTube algorithm will internally identify your video as “quality content” and engaging thus recommend to more people.
Quality content does not means quality pictures our using high quality camera but include how your video was edited, actions and the sense it give.
As the engagement increases your video can be among the “trending videos” or even the top trending video.
How to get more views by suggested videos
Suggested videos are a bit different from recommended video. Suggested videos are videos recommended to a viewer who watched a video in a niche similar to yours. The YouTube algorithm uses different technics in addition to some of the previous algorithm for this recommendation.
It determine your video’s category (entertainment, comedy, music etc.), graphical type (cartoon, animation, textual etc.), title, description, tags against the type of videos the viewer watched.
suggested video appears below active watching video, they are similar or in same category as current watching video.
